A timeline for reading sabong history
A timeline helps organise evidence, but a first written mention is not necessarily the beginning of a tradition. These reference points introduce the records used throughout SabongWiki.

1521: a traveller’s observation
Pigafetta’s voyage account describes people keeping roosters for fighting in the Philippine islands. Read it as a traveller’s observation in a particular place, rather than as a complete explanation of a practice’s origin.
The nineteenth century: literary evidence
José Rizal’s Noli Me Tangere includes a chapter titled The Cockpit. The scene brings together entertainment, money, social status, and the pressures facing its characters. Fiction can illuminate an author’s concerns without functioning as a census or administrative record.
Today: collections and research
Museums preserve objects, while cultural researchers study texts and community perspectives. These are different kinds of evidence. A responsible timeline names its source for each claim and leaves uncertain dates uncertain.
What this timeline does not claim
A date for a surviving account does not tell us when the first cockfight occurred. Avoid turning an often-repeated origin story into a precise date unless the evidence supports it.
