Modern Game: the exhibition breed

Modern Game is an exhibition chicken distinguished by long legs, an upright outline, and close feathering. Its name can be misleading: the modern breed was developed for poultry shows.

A breed shaped by exhibition

The Rare Breeds Survival Trust describes the gradual development of Modern Game by exhibitors after cockfighting became illegal in Britain in 1849. The birds were known as Exhibition Game during part of that transition.

Appearance

The Trust describes a long-legged bird with a tapered tail, small comb and wattles, and hard feathering. Colour varieties are part of its show classification. These descriptions distinguish it from the more compact Old English Game.

Large fowl and bantams

The source discusses both sizes. A bantam is a small poultry type; size classification should be read separately from colour variety. Modern Game illustrates how a breed’s later purpose can differ from the historical associations of its name.
